B2Q is nationally recognized for its retro-commissioning expertise and our comprehensive on-site analysis of building and equipment operations. We have particular expertise in the use of Building Automation Systems and trend logs to identify operating anomalies, and we work closely with client facilities staff to identify and recommend low cost measures, equipment repairs and upgrades, and operational improvements that typically reduce annual energy costs from 10 to 20%.

B2Q has performed EBCx investigation efforts in excess of 100 facilities throughout the Northeast. These investigations range from scoping (or preliminary) to full investment-grade efforts. A vast majority of these EBCx investigations have been performed with the involvement of the local electric/gas utilities, which provided incentives to implement the identified measures.

Where possible, B2Q’s preferred approach is to provide EBCx services in a turnkey or as close to turnkey approach as possible. We have found that the most successful EBCx projects for us have been ones where our team is involved from concept to Cx/M&V such that the knowledge gained, and relationships developed during the study phase of a project are carried over into implementation. Our goal is to involve the Owner’s operations staff, existing controls and HVAC service contractors and find a procurement method that allows the owner to utilize B2Q and our team to provide some or all of the following: Engineer of Record; Owner’s Project Manager (OPM); Design-Builder(turn-key); Commissioning Agent; Utility Incentives Consultant; and/or M&V provider.

We do our best to ensure that our client’s operations staff are involved from the beginning, obtaining their input and feedback, and we make sure they are trained during and at the close of the project so that they understand the changes being made and why they are being made. We also require the contractors making the changes to update system documentation reflecting the changes made so that we can deliver up to date as-built documentation at project close.

We have delivered turnkey EBCx services for more than 50 facilities, totaling over $10 million in project costs. These projects have realized savings of over 30,000,000 kWh/year, 1,500,000 therms of fuel, $5 million/year utility and O&M cost savings, and approximately 20,000 tons of CO2e/year.
